Power Cut Causes Radio Blackout

A widespread power outage hit the Kintyre, Mid-Argyll and Islay areas on Saturday 21 April 2012. Lasting from 20:10 to 22:25 approximately, it caused Argyll FM to go off air, affecting the studio and all three transmitters.

The independent local radio station's automatic systems were able to resume broadcasting five minutes after power was restored.

Rhythmic Radio

A new sound for weekend evenings on Argyll FM! Big Fat Party Anthems is three-hours of energy scheduled to go out on Saturday nights at midnight and Friday evenings at 2100, starting 16 March.

The show's presenter Tommy Martin says:

"Big Fat Party Anthems is the richest, danciest, most rhythmic programme on community/commercial/online radio across the world. End to end music and a breathless bangin’ beat make this a non-stop supercharged high energy batter through the late night hours. With feature tracks from British and Euro Dance and Old Skool, and with the famous megamixes, remixes & mash-ups, you’d have to be brain dead not to be moved by this beat. Experience the phenomenon that is Big Fat Party Anthems. Music will never be quite the same again.

The radio station is also a voluntary organisation and requires a substantial amount of money to operate.

We are very grateful to all Friends of Argyll FM.

Local Radio

Argyll FM has now been broadcasting since 2000 and we have successfully established ourselves as a valued asset within Argyll. Argyll FM is a totally independent radio station broadcasting 24 hours a day.

Presently Argyll FM reaches audiences in the tens of thousands from Campbeltown and the Kintyre peninsula, continuing north to Inveraray, including the islands of Mull, Islay, Jura, Arran and Gigha. Due to our unique geographical position of our three transmitters we are also able to broadcast to Northern Ireland and Ayrshire. Until Argyll FM was up and running there was no localised radio coverage for this sparsely populated district.

Many local performers, artists and charitable organisations have found Argyll FM an essential part of their success. We value our close liaisons with Strathclyde Police and Argyll and Bute Council to provide local weather, road reports and many other urgent appeals for information relevant to our listeners. We are able to enhance our broadcast area by promoting events for locals and tourists alike: each smaller community has their own programme of events throughout the year. For example Highland Games, Music Festivals, agricultural events, gala days,

Through our magazine programmes we are able to provide vital bulletins on educational, health and social issues of the day, thus becoming another channel of public awareness, especially to the more remote parts of our broadcast area.

Award winning child car seat safety initiative announces extended campaign for 2011

Following 10 years of proven success in raising awareness among parents, grandparents and carers about the dangers to children of inappropriate or incorrectly-fitted child car seats; a new-look Good Egg In-Car Child Safety campaign for 2011 launches on Monday the 27th of June.

Win a child car seat and find out what’s happening in your area

This long-running campaign has been endorsed by road safety authorities as having played a key part in cutting child road casualties over the past decade. Director of Road Safety Scotland, Michael McDonnell says: “We have seen the number of children killed or seriously injured in cars fall by 72%1 over the past ten years which marks a welcome contribution to the GB Government target of a 50% reduction2. This is a tremendous success story which I believe could not have been achieved without the Good Egg campaign.

“With even more challenging targets for child casualty reduction set by the Scottish Government for 2020, the Good Egg campaign will clearly be an essential element in our strategy for delivering these targets in the years ahead”.

Superintendent Alan Duncan, Lead Officer for the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (ACPOS) National Campaigns said: “Recent figures show a fall in child passenger casualties which is encouraging. However, we are still finding children who are either not wearing seatbelts or who are restrained by unsuitable or incorrectly-fitted car seats. We fully support the Good Egg Campaign which helps to educate drivers about their responsibilities in relation to in-car child safety and provides practical advice to ensure children are kept safe whilst on the move.”

According to campaign organisers, this year’s campaign will be the biggest yet with high-profile radio and online advertising backed up by extensive social media activity on Facebook and Twitter. The campaign will also build on the past success of Good Egg car seat clinics where parents can have the safety of their child seats checked out by experts at convenient locations across Scotland.

As Chairman and Chief executive of The Arnold Clark Group, which has sponsored the Good Egg Campaign every year since its initial national launch in 2002, Sir Arnold Clark commented: “As a father, grandfather and great grandfather, I am very conscious that children must be kept safe when they are travelling in a car. It doesn’t take much time to check that a car seat is fitted properly and it will always be too late after a collision. I therefore urge parents to go to a Good Egg clinic to ensure that their child seats are fitted safely – it could ultimately save their child’s life.”
